As we get ready for a new school year, here are 7 back-to-school Bible verses to pray over your children.
At the start of this year, I wrote down 12 verses for the new year.
The thought being that 12 verses meant one verse for every month of the year. I made printable verse cards, too. They are actually really helpful to print out, laminate, and hang on your bathroom mirror. I’m just saying. Head to the post to grab your copy here!
I was looking through these verses recently, and thinking on the one that I picked for August:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Back in January, I picked this verse because as exciting as the start of a new school year can be, new starts are often full of unknowns and uncertainty, too.
Little did I know just how fitting this verse would be as we face the start of a new school year this fall.
Whether your kids have already started school this year, are starting soon, going to in person classes, or virtual learning, or even if you are homeschooling this year, here are 7 back-to-school Bible verses to pray over your children.
Because no matter what your school decision is this year, I think we could all (our kids and ourselves included) could use a little bit of encouragement this year, am I right?
Bible Verses for the New School Year
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear. Anyone feeling a little nervous or anxious this year?
BUT, of power and of love and of sound mind. Perhaps feeling anxious, but can I encourage you to remember this truth? For me, personally that last phrase is particularly relevant this year and we make school decisions – sound mind.
Pray this year that God would make clear to you the right choices for your family. That he would give you confidence in those decisions and that you would trust him the whole way.
Pray also for your children who may have a little bit of fear and uncertainty getting back into the swing of things this fall. Pray that they too would be of sound mind, full of a spirit of love and power.
“The Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
Remember that no matter what is going on around us or how uncertain things may feel – God is with us. He will not fail us or leave us. Pray for your children to lean into this truth this year.
“Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you are also doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Pray that your children would be encouragers in their classrooms and with their peers. Pray also that you would be able to encourage and build up your children as they work this school year.
“Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.” 1 Timothy 4:12
Pray that your children would be examples to all those around them in the way that they conduct themselves. Pray also that you would not look down on them because they are young as you work to encourage, teach, and train them this year.
“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6
Pray that we would trust God to complete the work that He has begun in our children. Thank him for the opportunity to be apart of that work.
“Cast your burdens upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” Psalm 55:22
Pray that we will not strive to carry the burdens of this school year on our own. Pray that we will be able to discern when our children are feeling burdened, also so that we can bear their burdens with them and together, carry them to the Lord.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6
And finally, a good reminder to all of us to be anxious for nothing. Nothing. Zip. Nada. But in EVERYTHING, to present our requests before God.
Mamas, there is nothing that has caught God off guard about this year or this school year. No matter how chaotic things seem, how difficult school decisions can be, God is still on the throne.
Let’s go into this new school year, not confident in our own choices or circumstances. But, confident and full of peace because we know the one who holds all things together.
“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17
