Looking for a fun way to teach shapes to your kids this fall?  This Shape Monster Craft was a big hit around here.  It’s a fun way to learn about colors and shapes – even counting if you want to count the different shapes you use for each monster.

And like all the crafts around here, it’s easy to put together and versatile enough that your kids can really make it their own.

I suppose it could technically be a Halloween craft for kids, but there’s nothing specifically Halloween about them – so you can really make these shape monsters any time of the year.

Shape Monster Craft for Kids

I prepped this activity the day before and we actually spent a couple of mornings completing all of them.  Little was really only interested in making 2-3 at a time, but made clear that he wanted to save the rest for later.

And now, he’s pointed out some shapes that we missed that he’d like to make more of.  So, we will be repeating this activity closer to Halloween, I think.

Finally, just as a head’s up, these are the very specific instructions for how we made our shape monster craft.  You can use ANY shapes you want.  You can make just one shape monster or ten.  It’s really up to you.

Supplies

  • Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
    • We used both school glue and glue sticks and Little enjoyed both.  Our favorite is the disappearing purple glue sticks though so we can see exactly where the glue is for sticking things.  And it’s cool that it disappears.

Instructions

  1. Cut out Shape Monsters
    1. You’ll want each monster to be almost the size of the piece of construction paper to allow you to have enough space to glue everything on.
    2. We did 6 shapes for this project, but we plan to add more when we do it again.
    3. Choose basic shapes that you can easily draw and cut out.  We chose a square, oval, star, heart, circle, and pentagon.  Little has already asked about adding a rectangle and a hexagon next.
  2. Cut shapes for the features in different colors (eyes, noses, arms, legs, mouths, teeth, etc.)
    1. We used semi-circles for the mouths, small triangles and semi-circles for teeth and noses, and I made sure to cut enough circles so that each monster could have at least 2 eyes one larger circle and another smaller for the pupil.
  3. Glue the features onto each shape monster body.

*Our monsters didn’t have hair, but I did think how fun it would be to use some of the strips of paper to make wacky hairdos for each of them.

And that’s it.  A fun little shape monster family.  Of course, we displayed ours on a string on the mantel for the time being.

They’ll come down eventually when I finally decorate for fall, but I like displaying artwork after it’s complete. It’s a fun way to reiterate to Little how proud I am of the work he’s down.  And it makes him happy and proud to see it displayed too.

More Learning Fun with Shape Monsters

Keep the learning going with this shape monster craft by talking about the colors of your monsters, labeling the shapes, and counting how many shapes you used.

You can compare the sizes of shapes – which are smaller?  Which are bigger?  How many sides does each shape have?

This is another good reason to display your children’s artwork for a little while after it’s made.  It gives you lots of opportunities to talk about what you did afterwards.

  1. I never leave comments on things but figured I needed to share that this was the highlight of my toddlers day! I have a 7month old and my almost 3 year old and I do arts and crafts during her nap times. This was our morning craft and he had a blast – when he was finished he lined up all of his monsters and said “look mommy! They’re holding hands because they’re friends!” I’m a teacher and we start back at school Monday and I’m just soaking up as much of this as I can until then. Thanks again for the awesome idea!

  7. I love the idea of making a garland to display them. When my girls were younger I would stick there crafts in the dining room window and we could see them from outside too. We could do this in the school holidays in preparation for Halloween.
