If you are looking for a fun Bible lesson for kids, or perhaps a simple Sunday School Lesson about Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors, this activity is for you!  You can even download a free printable activity sheet to make your own coat of many colors.

Teaching our children about the Bible is incredibly important to our family.  Of course, we want them to learn other important skills too, but we believe that a strong biblical foundation matters.

One of the ways we do that with the boys in these little years is to read Bible stories together and create fun activities to help them remember important lessons.  It’s fun to watch them see how God has been faithful throughout the Bible and then connecting that to things that might be happening in our lives.

Joseph and His Coat of Many Colors

The story of Joseph and his coat of many colors is a well-loved Bible story from the Old Testament.  You can read it starting in Genesis 37.

It tells the story of Joseph, who is the favorite of his father and his relationship with his brothers.  It’s a story of God’s faithfulness.  And how he can redeem even the most broken relationships for his glory.

Essentially, his father gives Joseph a beautiful coat of many colors and his brothers are in turn wildly jealous (and as a parent of more than one child, I imagine this is how giving just one child such an elaborate gift would go down in our house too.)

So, his brothers decide to take matters into their own hands by going out of the way, taking the coat away from Joseph, and plotted to kill him.

They decided later, however, not to kill him but to sell him into slavery instead, but lead their father to believe that he was attacked by animals and had died.

Ultimately, Joseph gets taken into Egypt as a slave, but through a turn of events, ends up being placed in a high position as Pharaoh’s right hand man.

And when famine strikes, he is able to use his wisdom to care for the people under his watch and also his own brothers and father, who do not even recognize him at first.

We love the Jesus Storybook Bible for teaching these stories to our children!

Key Takeaway from this Joseph Bible Lesson

When Joseph’s brothers finally recognize him, they are obviously scared for his retaliation, but instead Joseph responds by telling them:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” – Genesis 50:20

For preschoolers and toddlers, I used the following as our key truth for this activity: No matter what, God can use it for good!” as a reminder that no matter what happens or what our circumstances are, God is able to make good from that.  I want them to grow up knowing that God is faithful and he can redeem whatever seems broken.  He is bigger than our circumstances.

Make Your Own Joseph Bible Craft

For good reason, Joseph’s coat of many colors is the most recognizable “picture” in this story.  And kids loved the opportunity to decorate their own coats of many colors to help remember this story.

Here’s what we used for this Bible craft.

Joseph Bible Craft printable template - A Bible Lesson for Kids - Joseph and the coat of many colors activity

Supplies:

  • FREE printable coat template (I drew this for our boys and we’ve used it to make multiple coats of many colors around here!)
  • Paint Sticks or colorful markers
    • We LOVED using these Kwik Stix paint sticks for this craft because the colors are so bright and dry so quickly!
    • We’ve also done this craft with markers or stickers.
    • Other ideas might be pom poms or construction paper squares.
    • Basically, whatever you have on hand that’s easiest for your child or class to use will work just fine!

For our coats of many colors, I wrote our key truth: “No matter what, God can use it for good!” along with Genesis 50:20 on each craft as a reminder to us when we see our projects displayed at home.
