St. Patrick’s Day Picture Books to Read with your Children This Year
Reading aloud is something that we value very much in our home and homeschool. No matter how old the boys get, if I grab a good book and start reading aloud, they almost always come over one by one to hear the story.
I hope they never grow out of it. We especially love seasonal read aloud books that we can come back to each year.
This year, we have put together some of our absolute favorite St. Patrick’s Day books to share. We have been reading these over and over and agree that they are fun to read, fun to listen to, and fun to come back to again and again.
St. Patrick’s Day by Gail Gibbons
This is a great non-fiction introduction to the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Like most Gail Gibbons books, this one is full of colorful illustrations, bite sized nuggets of history and information that is perfect for kids. This book covers the history and different traditions that are associated with St. Patrick’s Day.
Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland by Tomie dePaola
If you are a looking for a non-fiction book that tells the story of St. Patrick, after whom the holiday is named, this is our favorite. The illustrations are beautiful, like Tomie dePaola books are and the story is told is such a captivating and engaging way.
St. Patrick’s Day in the Morning by Eve Bunting
St. Patrick’s Day in the Morning is a sweet story about a little boy, Jamie, who sets out to prove to himself and others that he is indeed not to small to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade with his brothers.
A Fine St. Patrick’s Day by Susan Wojciechowski
A tale of kindness and rivalry, two towns seek to win the contest for best St. Patrick’s Day decor. Will the team that always wins win again or will the underdogs come through this year? We all loved this one!
Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie dePaola
We are big Tomie dePaola fans over here and this Irish Tale did not disappoint. Jamie O’Rourke is the laziest man in Ireland, but when his wife gets sick – he needs to find a way to make ends meet. When he happens on a leprechaun who gives him a special potato seed. But what will he do with such a huge potato? Another fun read this year!
Tim O’Toole and the Wee Folk by Gerald McDermott
Tim O’Toole and the Wee Folk is another fun tale to read with your kids this St. Patrick’s Day. Tim O’Toole and his wife are incredibly poor. That is until Tim sets out to find a new job and meets a band of leprechauns along the way. The leprechauns keep up their end of the deal – giving Tim treasure, but will he make it home without being outwitted by the tricky McGoon family?
That’s What Leprechauns Do by Eve Bunting
This was the first book we pulled out to read this year and it is so fun! Three leprechauns are in a race against time to get the pot of gold out of hiding and at the end of the rainbow – official leprechaun business. Can they make it without getting distracted or will mischief find them along the way? After all, mischief is what leprechauns do, right?
How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace
These next two books are our leprechaun trap inspiration. Our boys are actively thinking about how they want to build their traps. How to Catch a Leprechaun takes a peak at several seemingly well thought out leprechaun traps. And yet, somehow the sneaky leprechaun evades each one.
Three Ways to Trap a Leprechaun by Tara Lazar
Join Claire on her journey to catch her leprechaun. Kids will enjoy seeing how she revises her traps to get the perfect leprechaun trap. Will she be able to catch Finn, the leprechaun?
This one is especially fun if you want to build leprechaun traps with your kids because it includes a fun “how to” in the back of the book that kids will enjoy following along with. It’s a fun one to get your creative gears turning!
There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover by Lucille Colandro
Our kids LOVE this one. It is full of silly, nonsensical adventure – another in the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly series. In this one, the old lady begins by swallowing a clover and continues on in a grand St. Patrick’s Day romp.
Lucky Tucker by Leslie McGuirk
Lucky Tucker is a fun board book, that is especially great for toddlers and preschoolers. It tells the story of a puppy Tucker who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed to a very unlucky day. Will he be able to turn his luck around? You’ll have to read to find out.
