Can I let you in on a little secret?  Valentine’s Day is actually one of my favorite holidays.  It’s such a fun day to celebrate the people in your life that you love!  And since becoming a mom, it is especially fun for me to celebrate!

We fill the season with all things hearts and sweets and have a great time celebrating.

Today, I’m sharing a new Valentine’s Day craft that we made this year – pipe cleaner and pony bead heart ornaments!

These beaded hearts are a great fine motor activity for Valentine's Day this year! This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.  If you click through those links and make a purchase, I will earn a commission.  For more information, feel free to see disclosure.

Make Your Own Beaded Heart Ornaments

These Valentine’s Day ornaments are so simple to put together.  And my guess is that you likely have the supplies you need on hand.  If not, you can easily grab them online or at your local craft store.

What You’ll Need

Directions

  • Fold the pipe cleaner in half and make a crease.  It should hold just fine to support the beads.

  • Gently curve the sides to make the shape of a heart.
    • Leave the ends open and separate to allow the beads to be threaded on.

  • Add beads to each side of the heart, leaving about 1/2 inch on each side to close the heart ornament.

  • Once you’ve filled your pipe cleaner, twist the top ends together to “seal” your heart.
  • You can gently re-shape it if needed.

  • To hang your ornaments, simply tie a thin ribbon to it and hang it where you wish.

My oldest and I actually did this craft together and it was such fun.  Who knew that threading beads onto pipe cleaners could be so calming?  Highly recommend.

Why Pipe Cleaners and Pony Beads?

Not only are these beaded hearts a fun Valentine’s Day craft, but they actually have lots of great benefits for little hands making them.

First, threading is a GREAT way to practice fine motor skills.  That’s why lacing cards are so popular for preschoolers and toddlers –  threading the pipe cleaner through the beads is really good practice.

Next, when you have lots of different colors of beads to choose from, you can use them to help practice naming colors, or to identify and practice patterns on your hearts.

Of course, the main point of all of this is to have fun and be creative – so don’t get too hung up on creating the perfect patterns – or even using traditional “Valentine’s Day colors”.

Give your child some creative freedom to choose their beads as they wish.

They will love seeing their ornaments on display for Valentine’s Day!

(And if you want, you can even save them for Christmas, too!  We do love sweet handmade ornaments on the tree!)
