If you are looking for fun, Christian Easter crafts that can be easily adapted for home or church, this empty tomb craft is for you. With two different design options and a printable template for each, kids will love making these “He is risen” activities to celebrate the Resurrection.

Happy Easter – He is risen! He is risen indeed!

If you have been around here for a while, you know that while we love a good Easter egg hunt around here, we try to keep the Easter season and holiday Christ-centered in our home. With young kids, some of the simplest way to do this are by reading good books and doing hands-on activities or crafts.

I’ve found that when we incorporate both of these things, whether for a faith lesson or school, our boys not only enjoy it more, but they tend to remember it better as well.

This year, I wanted to create a fun and simple Christian Easter craft to do together. We have done a similar empty tomb craft with a paper plate years ago and I thought it would be fun to do an updated version using construction paper.

You could easily adapt this for home or Sunday school depending on your needs and I’ve made a printable template you can download to make it easier. (My oldest used the template and did the whole thing by himself.)

Empty Tomb Craft Two Ways

I made this craft two different ways. Both of them are simple and require minimal prep and supplies. The first uses a brad fastener to allow you to “roll” the stone away from the tomb, and the second uses just paper for a “flip the flap” idea.

Roll the Stone Away Empty Tomb Craft

This was my oldest son’s favorite version. He liked the fact that the stone could actually move away from the tomb and it felt more like it was rolling away.

Supplies

Instructions:

  • To start, grab a piece of paper for your background. I just used a piece of copy paper cut in half. Any paper will do.
  • Cut your tomb and stone out using the template (all of my templates are hand drawn and certainly not perfect. You can easily free hand this if you want.)
  • Cut out a separate background piece to be in the empty tomb. We used yellow for this and just cut a simple rectangle that fit the open space.
  • Cut out your stone. Make sure it’s big enough to cover the tomb’s entrance.
  • Glue the tomb background behind your tomb and onto the copy paper.
  • Use a brad fastener to connect your stone.
  • Using a pen or marker, write “He is risen!” inside of the empty tomb.
  • Decorate the background of your craft however you wish.

Lift the Flap Empty Tomb Craft

This might be the simplest version of this craft, although little hands might need help cutting out the flap. But supplies are mostly the same and just as simple as the first.

Supplies

Instructions:

  • Cut your tomb and stone out using the template.
  • Cut out a separate background piece to be in the empty tomb.
  • Cut out your stone. Make sure that you don’t cut all the way through the tomb paper so that you can fold the flap down.
  • Glue the tomb background behind your tomb and onto the copy paper.
  • Using a pen or marker, write “He is risen!” inside of the empty tomb.
  • Decorate the background of your craft however you wish.

And that’s it. I used colored pencils to draw the background of my craft and added the three crosses in the background.

Kids can decorate their craft however they wish.

This was a fun way to remember the reason we celebrate Easter and the hope that we have in the resurrection of Christ!
