Anyone else feeling a little last minute this year or is it just me?
We had big plans to do all the Christmas things this year, and here we are just over a week left to go and we are finally getting around to some fun Christmas crafts and celebrating.
Frankly, that’s about par for the course around here this year, but there are definitely days where I feel way behind.
So, if you’re looking for a fun Christmas craft or DIY ornament you can do with your kids this year – you are in the right place.
These craft stick and pom pom Christmas trees were fun to make and even more fun to hang on the tree and today, I’ll show you how to make your own!

How to Make a Craft Stick Christmas Tree Ornament
I did this craft, like most crafts around here with my oldest boys – ages 5 and almost 3. As it normally goes, my 3 year old needed some extra help and guidance, while still feeling in control of his own creative process.
And we learned a lot as we went along that I think will help you making your own DIY Christmas tree ornaments.
Here’s what you need to know.
Supplies
- Craft sticks – you’ll need three for each Christmas tree.
- Green marker or paint. If using paint, these paint sticks work REALLY well for this (it’s what we used!)
- Hot glue gun
- School glue
- Pom Poms*
- String or ribbon
*Depending on the ages of your kids, and especially if making this with younger kids, you may opt to just use stickers instead of pom poms to avoid glue (almost) altogether. I was VERY close to going this route just for convenience, but the boys decided on pom poms instead. (If you decide to use stickers, consider using wider jumbo craft sticks for more surface area.)
** Another alternative that would be really pretty, would be to use rhinestones on your craft sticks! Unfortunately, we don’t have these on hand in our cabinet, but if we did, I know the boys would have loved them!
Directions
- Use paint sticks or markers to color each craft stick green.
- Hot glue each of the sticks together into the shape of a triangle.
- Using school glue, glue pom poms to your tree ornament.
- A note – I usually remind the boys to practice controlling the glue or using just a bit. In order for the pom poms to stick well, feel free to use plenty of glue.
- Let your Christmas tree ornaments sit out for several hours to dry completely. The pom poms will fall off if the glue is still wet.
- Once dried completely, tie a ribbon or string around your ornaments and hang them up on the tree!
*If kids are older, a strip of hot glue on each craft stick would be ideal to more securely hold the pom poms. We used regular school glue and the pom poms have held up pretty well, but they will come off if they’re pulled.
