Whether you are looking for a creepy crawly Halloween spider craft for kids, or doing a fun spider study, this easy spider craft (complete with a spider web made from cotton balls) is sure to be a hit!
One thing that my boys love to do whenever we go outside is to search for bugs.
And for some reason, we have a particular fascination with spiders, or “spidey” as my middle boy affectionately calls all the spiders he finds.
I mean, I can’t totally blame them. If you step back and take a look at a spider web in the sun, it is pretty incredible.
So today, I thought it would be fun to share an easy spider craft that we put together recently!
Easy Spider Craft for Kids
This spider craft is a fun project to do with Halloween coming up, but can really be used year-round.
The boys enjoyed not only making their own creepy crawly spiders, but also their cotton ball spider webs! And I’ve got to admit, there was something oddly satisfying about pulling apart those cotton balls.
For reference, I did this with my older two boys – ages 5 and 2.5 and the both enjoyed it. My 2 year old needed a little bit of extra help and guidance, but he was able to do it confidently just the same.
My 5 year old was able to make his spider craft independently and had a blast!
You’ll want to start of by making your spider web.
How to Make a Spider Web Out of Cotton Balls
To make your spider web, you’ll need to grab:
- Card stock paper (any color will do)
- We used card stock rather than regular construction paper for this craft since the cotton balls are a little heavier.
- You can certainly use construction paper if that’s what you have on hand.
- School glue
- Or as my kids like to call it, “squeeze glue”
- Cotton balls
- I think about 3 or 4 will do.
Instructions
- Use your glue to create a spider web design. It does not need to be perfect AT ALL. You are basically just creating a general area to stick your web.
- Carefully pull apart cotton balls where they are thinned out and more string like.
- Glue them carefully to your paper.
Now, you’re ready to start making your spider!
How to Put Together Your Spider
Supplies
- Colored card stock for the head and body (any color)
- Black card stock paper or construction paper for the legs
- Googly eyes
- Glue stick
- We like the disappearing purple glue sticks, especially for crafting with younger children because the purple color helps them see where the glue is for a guide.
Directions
- To make your spider’s head and body, draw and cut out 2 circles from your paper – one bigger and one smaller.
- Next, cut 8 small strips of black paper for your spider’s legs.
- Using your glue stick, attach the head and legs to the larger circle (the body).
- Flip your spider over and glue on the googly eyes.
- Once your spider is complete, use your school glue (the “squeeze” glue) to glue it on top of the web.
And that’s it!
In typing all that out, it seems very involved, but it really was a super simple craft to put together. And how cute is that little spider in his web?
