Are you looking for a quick and simple toddler activity?  This simpleMega Bloks color sorting activity for toddlers might be just the thing.  A fun way to allow toddlers to practice recognizing colors and sorting objects by color.

When our middle was about 18 months old, we started to intentionally introduce colors to him.  Already, we pointed out colors around us and in books, but I was looking for a fun, playful, and easy way to focus on colors with him.

So, I grabbed construction paper and my trusty laminator and made what I guess you could call DIY color flashcards.

You could also just call them laminated construction paper and that would be fine, too.

At first, we just used the cards – one or two at a time to practice our colors.  I’d hold up a card and tell him what the color was.

“This is red.  Can you say red?” and so on.  We’d do it a few times a day.

Once he got some of his colors, we introduced the concept of sorting objects by color and this simple activity was born.

Advice for Getting Started Sorting Colors with Toddlers

We have several color cards, but my advice if this is a new concept to your toddler is just to focus on one or two colors at a time and build from there.

Too many colors can be overwhelming and even frustrating for little ones.

We want to build not only their skills, but their confidence, too with this activity.

Even if you just have one color paper and one color blocks and practice identifying that the blocks match the paper, your child is still busy learning and making connections.

Just like anything else, learning colors is a process and they’ll get it in their time.

Another tip is to make sure that you only have Mega Bloks or other sorting items that have a match to your paper.  (For example, I pulled out all the turquoise blocks before we started because we were not trying to learn turquoise just starting out.)

More Sorting Fun

Once your little one has a good grasp on sorting, you can use your color cards to let them go on a “color hunt” around the house to identify items that are each color on their own.  This one is always a hit around here.
