Fa la la!  This really is the best (and sometimes busiest) time of the year!  If you missed our family’s Christmas Bucket List, be sure to check that out here.  We have lots of fun things planned for this season – and I’m trying to stay on top of it as best I can, because as fun as this season is, it will just swallow you whole if you let it.  There are parades, parties, crafts, baking, decorating, shopping, planning, traveling, and the list goes on and on.

And have you ordered your Christmas cards yet?  Because those need to be going out soon too.  And whew.  There’s not a single thing wrong with any of those things.  We like them all around here – it’s just that if we’re not careful about staying organized and being willing to say no to some things, it can all become too much.

Today, I’m sharing a fun Christmas craft with you all that we have really enjoyed over here.  These footprint Christmas tree cards are not only really easy, but I think they turned out SO cute!

We actually made this Christmas card craft a couple of years ago.  We ran out of photo cards at the last minute and had several more people to send cards too.  So, we stamped Little’s foot onto card stock paper, with a handwritten note and put them in the mail.

And do you know what?  I loved them almost more than the cards we ordered and paid for.

How to Make Footprint Christmas Tree Cards

Ever since the first year we made these homemade cards, we do a little mix of printed Christmas cards (that we save first for family and friends that live far away and don’t see us often) and homemade Christmas cards that we let the kids help make each year (well – I suppose this will be the Littlest’s first year to participate, and his participation is still TBD because #babysfirstchristmas).

It takes some of the pressure off of ordering exactly the right amount of cards – we do still order cards because I love having the annual Christmas card photos to look back on – and allows us to give out way more cards each year.  The more the merrier, right?

And frankly, I think there is something special about something that someone took time to make for you.

If you want to make your own footprint Christmas tree cards, you’ll need the following.

  • Green tempura kids paint, or other kid-safe paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Heavy card stock paper, cut to size – big enough to fit a footprint and your envelopes.  4×6 or 5×7 is typically standard
  • Colorful, fine-tip markers
  • Felt tip pen or marker for signing
  • Envelopes if you are going to be mailing these

Directions

  • Cut card stock paper to fit your child’s foot and your envelopes.
    • I use this paper cutter to cut our paper – it’s really affordable and I’ve been using it for years!
  • Using the sponge brush, cover your child’s foot with green paint

  • Have your child stamp his/her foot onto the card stock paper.
    • If you’re making these with a baby, you’ll need to stamp the paper yourself
  • Once the paint has dried thoroughly, use a black fine tip marker to draw your “string” for Christmas lights.
    • I usually just go in a zig-zag pattern

  • Draw lights on with colored markers
  • Add a yellow star on top – either with a marker or a sticker
  • Write your message and that’s it!

*Optional – if you want to save some time drawing lights on your cards, just let your kids decorate the tree with stickers.  Whatever makes your life easier – both turn out super cute.
