Happy Christmas week, friends!

In the spirit of last minute everything over here this year, I’m sharing another fun DIY Christmas ornament that I think you’ll love!

These glitter ornaments are a really quick and simple way to add extra sparkle to your Christmas tree.

They are super festive, and while they are totally kid friendly (I made mine with both older boys), they are fun to make for adults, too.

DIY Glitter Bauble Ornaments Tutorial

So, let’s jump right in then.

How to Make DIY Glitter Ornaments

Here is your step-by-step, DIY glitter ornament tutorial.  First, you’ll need to grab your supplies.

Christmas Ornament Craft supplies

Supplies:

  • Shatterproof, clear bauble ornaments (You can usually find these at most craft stores during the holiday season.)
    • Emphasis on the shatterproof, because you already know.
  • School glue, or mod-podge
  • Glitter
    • Any glitter will do, but I think that fine glitter holds better.  We used what we had on hand, and the fine glitter definitely stuck better.
  • Small funnel
    • You can always create a funnel with paper, but I found that using a small, plastic funnel worked a lot better for us.

Directions

  • First, you’ll need to water down your adhesive – whether you choose to use glue or mod-podge, you want it to be a little bit runny so that it will coat the inside of the ball ornament.  To do this, you can use a small bowl to mix glue with small drops of water until you get  a runny, but still thick texture.
    • Our whole bottle of glue was conveniently already watered down thanks to some creative kids who attempted their own slime recipe that included just water and glue…
    • But, if you have a bottle of glue that is almost empty, add some water directly in – and it will work just fine.  Otherwise, mixing it in a bowl is your best bet.
  • Next, remove the top cap of the ornament and add a small bit of glue inside.

I think our glue was a little bit too watered down at first, so I added some regular school glue after mixing this. But, see, I really did not add very much to the inside.
  • Once you’ve added your glue, spin your ornament around until the glue has covered the inside fully.  At this point, if you need to add more glue (or a few more drops of water to correct the consistency), you can do that.
  • You just want to make sure that the whole inside surface is covered with adhesive.

  • Next, add your glitter.  I don’t have a photo for this step, because it’s all hands on deck once glitter comes out over here.
    • A funnel makes this significantly easier, but you can also try to funnel the glitter in with paper.
  • Once your glitter is in, you want to cover the opening of your ornament and shake, twist, and turn the bauble until glitter has covered the inside surface.
    • At this point, just like with the glue, you might want to add more glitter, and that’s fine.  Keep adding glitter until the ornament is covered how you like it.
  • Re-insert the hook for your ornament and leave the ornaments still to dry before hanging them on the tree.
    • I recommend turning them occasionally while they dry to prevent glitter from settling on one side.
