These palm leaf crafts are a great way to celebrate Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week as we prepare to celebrate Easter.  They are simple Palm Sunday crafts that you can use for Sunday School classes or at home with your children!

As we prepare for Easter, we usually have a mix of secular and religious activities going on around here.  We love a good egg-hunt, and we very well might find Easter baskets for the boys, but it is really important to me that we are intentional not just about having fun with Easter crafts and sticker eggs, but that we teach our boys the real reason we are celebrating.

Jesus died for our sins.  He took our consequence.  Then he rose again.  And we can have confidence that he has done everything necessary for our salvation.  And, man.  That is good news.

So, as we are preparing our hearts and our homes to celebrate, I wanted to create activities to commemorate Holy Week so that it stays on our minds the whole week of Easter.

And Palm Sunday is the beginning of that.

Palm Sunday marks Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey just days before his crucifixion.  (You can read the story from Matthew 21:1-11 here).

The Bible tells us that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and when he entered the city, the people covered the ground with their cloaks and palm branches shouting, “hosanna!”.

This is such a fun part of the Easter celebration for me.

Today, I’m sharing two paper palm leaf crafts for kids to help you teach about Palm Sunday to your children – either at home or at church.

Both of these Palm Sunday crafts require minimal supplies, are easy to put together and are lots of fun for children to use to wave and shout their own hosannas.

Paper Strip Palm Branch Craft

The first palm branch craft requires a little more set-up, in that an adult will most likely need to cut the paper strips.  If your children are older, this is something they could do on their own.

Supplies

  • Green construction paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Wooden craft sticks
  • Paper cutter, or scissors

Directions

  • Using your paper cutter, cut strips of green paper.  I used a half sheet of construction paper and got 4 palm branches.
    • Use your craft sticks as a guide as to exactly how big you want them.  I ended up cutting them around 1/2 inch wide and then in half again.
  • Let your child add glue to the craft sticks and stick the “branches” (green paper strips) on.

  • We found about 3-4 strips to be the right amount.
  • Once the glue dries, practice waving your palm branches!

Paper Palm Branch Craft – Scissors Practice for Kids

This next version of the Palm Sunday craft requires an adult to cut out the general shape of the palm leaf, but children will enjoy getting to use scissors to make their own palm branches.  This is a great activity to practice those fine motor muscles for scissors skills with your preschoolers.

Supplies

  • Green construction paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Wooden craft sticks
  • Kids’ Scissors

Directions

  • Cut palm branch shape from green construction paper. (See ours below – basically an oval with a little point on the end – it’s totally fine to eye-ball it.)
    • Easiest thing to do is fold paper in half before cutting to make sure it’s symmetrical.
    • We used 1/2 sheet of construction paper per craft.  You don’t want them too big for your craft sticks.  Use your craft sticks as a guide for what fits best.

  • Have children cut little slits around the perimeter of the leaf using child-safe scissors.
  • Use glue stick to put glue onto the craft stick  and stick on your palm leaf.

  • Once the glue dries, practice waving your palm branch.

And that’s it.  Two really simple, but full of fun crafts for your Palm Sunday celebrations.

I’d love to know if anyone has other fun Holy Week activities!  How do you celebrate Easter with your family?
