This paper plate pumpkin is a fun fall craft for kids. It’s a great cut and paste or even a rip and tear activity – perfect for developing those fine motor skills in little hands.
It’s official. Fall is my favorite season. Sure, we like the beach and the swimming pool in the summer. But seeing as how it stays warm enough for both of those things in North Carolina through September I think I can claim Fall as my favorite.
The weather is cooling down, but it’s still warm on most days. Basically, it’s wonderful and we want to be outside whenever we can.
We’ve already been to the pumpkin patch 3 times this year – for pumpkins, for running around, and for grabbing local, fresh Fall and Winter squashes, which just so happen to be the littlest’s favorite food group these days.
And so, the big boys and I decided to make our own pumpkins.
After a quick reach into our craft cabinet, these paper plate pumpkins were born.
How to Make Your Own Paper Plate Pumpkin Craft
If you are looking for a fun Fall craft, or specifically a pumpkin craft to do with your kids this season, these are perfect.
They are easy to put together, versatile, and use supplies that you most likely already have at home.
Supplies
- Paper plate(s)
- Orange construction paper
- Each paper plate used about 1 sheet of construction paper.
- Brown or green construction paper
- Glue (or glue sticks)
- Scissors
Directions
This craft hardly needs many “instructions”, but here you go.
- Create small mosaic like pieces from your orange paper. My boys shared this task with me. I cut the paper into strips and we each took a few strips and cut shapes from them. (Meaning, I thought it would be fun to cut out different shapes at first, but we quickly moved to just cutting the long strip into shorter pieces.)
- Alternatively, you can allow your kids to rip and tear the paper into smaller pieces (similar last year’s pumpkin craft). Either will work and can be really fun for kids.
- Add glue to your paper plate. You really can’t go wrong here and if your kids are anything like mine, they will LOVE to add the glue. There is no right way to do this part – just cover the plate and you’re good.
- Stick the orange pieces of paper to the glue until your paper plate is covered. Again, any way you stick it will work.
- Using your brown or green construction paper, cut out a pumpkin stem (aka a short strip of paper).
- Glue the stem to the pumpkin.
And that’s it. Make sure to give the pumpkin plenty of time to dry before carrying them around to prevent paper falling off.
With Halloween coming up, my oldest has requested to update his pumpkin with black paper facial features to turn it into a jack-o-lantern. So, that’s another idea if you want to make this more of a Halloween specific craft!
