Another Day, Another St. Patrick’s Day Activity
We have been upping our “activities” game over here, which would have surprised me if you told me that a couple of months ago. The fact is though, that having a new baby puts us at home a lot more these days.
Trying to balance naps, lunch, snacks, etc. and getting out of the house with everyone during the week is challenging to say the least. We still get out at least 3 days a week for our regular activities, but the other days, we tend to park it at home.
Add to that, the fact that I am nursing what feels like around the clock, and that means that my time is spread more thinly between all of the boys.
Taking some time each week to plan some special activities for the bigger boys has proven to be incredibly helpful at keeping us all on some level of routine.
It’s been fun to create these games and things for them. They look forward to it anytime I tell them we have a new activity. And I get to enjoy the intentional time that I get with them.
This St. Patrick’s Day I Spy game is super easy and fun for little ones.
Benefits of I Spy Games
We introduced I Spy or “Find It” games a long time ago around here with the Hello magazines from Highlights. Our youngest still gets the Hello magazines and our oldest has moved on to the High Five magazines, also from Highlights, which always includes lots of hidden picture games.
So, I knew that this St. Patrick’s Day find it game would be a hit. Not only is it fun, but there are really good educational benefits to I spy and find it games for children.
Helps with observation and differentiation skills.
As children look at the whole picture and mentally break it up unto smaller parts, they are able to use and improve differentiation skills. This seeing smaller parts of the whole picture is an important skill for them to build.
I Spy games also help children improve memory.
As they break the whole image apart and go back to find specific images within it, they use memory to go back to the parts of the whole picture. And this repeated going back and finding new objects is beneficial in building strong memory skills.
Get Your Own St. Patrick’s Day Find It Game
Our St. Patrick’s find it game is super simple. I’ve made a downloadable version that you can easily print to do it yourself. You can grab it here.
To make it reusable, I recommend using either page protectors or dry erase pockets and dry erase markers. (We have ours in regular page protectors and I’ve added it to our wipe clean activity book for the month.)
How to Use the Printable
The printable is 2 pages – the first is the actual St. Patrick’s Day I Spy picture and the second is the “worksheet”. The worksheet is simple, it asks children to write how many of each item they count and then compare and tell which item has the most and least.
We used a dry erase marker to circle each item we were looking for and then wiped it clean when we moved to the next item. This was VERY helpful for my 4 year old to keep track of which items he was looking at.
And that’s it. It’s easy peasy, but really lots of fun and a great quiet time activity for kids.
